The Board of Directors of The Maine State Carousel is proud to introduce our newest member, Lee Graf. Lee manages an estate in Mid-Maine that has a custom made carousel that was installed about three years ago. Lee has been involved in that
carousel from the start. He was involved in the construction of the building that houses the carousel. When the time came to receive and install the new carousel, Lee was on hand to coordinate the delivery and installation of the carousel. Lee told me that the carousel arrived in a large semi-trailer truck and needed to move up a winding hill to the waiting structure.
Lee also said that the assembly of the carousel itself took a week and went together flawlessly. A well-tuned carousel is like a precision watch. It is meticulously balanced to the degree that Lee was able to move the 30,000-pound merry-go-round by pushing it. It is necessary to move the carousel by hand for the flying animals to be hoisted upward to their highest position so that the various parts can be greased. Maintenance of the machine is another task in Lee’s list of responsibilities.
Lee’s experience with this carousel will be a great benefit to the board as we move through the specifications for our carousel as well as the big day when it arrives.
